On June 21st our guild had the honor to be part of a tribute in honor of a very special woman, Janet. The event was called “Baskets for Janet”. In the words her twin sister Joanne “Janet was fun. Janet made life fun. As twin sisters, we did everything together. We also have 6 older siblings for a total of 6 girls and two boys (with two special sister in laws). If you ask any of us who our favorite sibling is, all of us would say Janet. Janet made us all stronger and more connected. We didn’t need a destination or activity to fill our time together, simply just being together was enough for us. Janet had many hobbies. One of her hobbies was basket weaving. Janet made many baskets for herself but also as gifts for family and friends. Janet lived her life by loving others. And by taking care of others. She cooked regularly for her elderly neighbors, and for anyone who needed a home cooked meal such as if they were sick or just had a baby. She was devoted to helping less fortunate mothers learn the best way to care for themselves and their babies through her job of more than 30 years as a registered dietician. She felt immense joy and purpose in helping others.” Sadly Janet passed away in mid March from cancer. Janet intended to weave a basket for each caregiver as a thank you. Unfortunately she made it halfway through one basket before she became too sick to weave. Joanne contacted us through Facebook to help Janet’s sisters and a sister in law make a total of seven baskets. It was truly our honor to do our best to help fulfill Janet’s wish. What a wonderful day spent with a lovely family - Judy, Kim, Dottie, Diane, Laura, Barb and Joanne. We had a day of laughter, memories, tears and new friendships. In Janet’s memory, this wonderful family gave a very generous donation. We will use this to help fulfill our mission to educate and promote the art of basketry in the community. Judy, Kim, Dottie, Diane, Laura, Barb, Joanne are going to teach Janet’s seven nieces to basket weave.

Beverly, Olivia, Ben and I had a great time yesterday at the Maker’s festival. It was three busy hours demonstrating, assisting with hands on basketweaving experiences, and answering questions. Hope the libraries continue to have more public events like this.
